Heat rises, so even sitting on the bench your head is in the warmest air in the room. Your scalp and ears cop it first, and that’s usually what sends people out the door before the rest of them is ready. A wool hat slows that down. You stay comfortable, you last longer, and you get the session you actually came in for.

This one from TempTango is a bucket shape rather than the traditional pointy Nordic job. Same function, but you can wear it into the coffee shop afterwards without having to explain yourself.

It earns its keep in the plunge too. Head stays warm while the rest of you works out what just happened.

Try one first

We keep a couple on hand at the sauna. Grab one before your session, wear it in the heat, see what the difference feels like. If you love it, take one home. If it’s not for you, no harm done and you’ve had a better sauna for it.

Looking after it

Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent, then dry flat. No wringing or twisting. Spot clean small marks.

Hang it by the internal loop after every session. That’s the whole trick to keeping it fresh.
